Special Olympics Illinois Area 18

Athletes/Participation

Special Olympics Illinois Area 18Special Olympics is a year round program of training and competition for children and adults with special needs. Special Olympics gives participants continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Special Olympics offers a variety of athletic opportunities including bowling, gymnastics, ice skating, soccer, volleyball, basketball, alpine and nordic skiing, and athletics, to name a few. Additionally, Area 18 offers Unified Sports, involving athletes equally matched up with individuals from the community and Special Olympic Flamearea corporations.

Volunteers/Coaches

Are you interested in sharing your time and talent with some special athletes? Special Olympics needs coaches for soccer, softball, skiing and other sports. Assistance is also welcome for those interested in coordinating tournaments or fundraising events.

Unified Sports

Unified Sports have been a big success in the northwest suburbs; offering seasonal team sports such as softball, baseball and bowling. Unified programs are made of Special Olympics athletes equally matched up with partners from corporate groups and community individuals. New athletes and partners are welcome to join at the Special Olympics Racebeginning of each session.

Please contact Erin Newport, Sports and Competition Coordinator via email at enewport@nwsra.org or at 847/392-2842 to discuss your interests and opportunities available for volunteers and coaches as well as Unified Sports.

Testimonial:

The December 4 Area 18 Tournament held at Wheeling High School was a delight for our athletes, coaches and parents. It was clear that the Special Olympics Illinois Area 18 staff put a lot of effort in the planning and organizing of the event.
