Unplug Illinois, a campaign of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association, promotes parks as a place to play, as well as the value that parks play in creating healthier communities.

Northwest Special Recreation Association supports the efforts of the Unplug Illinois campaign by encouraging others to visit their local Park District parks and facilities.

Unplug Illinois encourages people to get out, unplug, play and engage with one another through experiences at local park and recreation agencies. Whether a person is biking with friends on local trails, playing a sport, taking in a class or simply cooling off at the pool, Illinois is home to thousands of park and recreation facilities that can help people live a happier and healthier life.

Studies have shown that unplugging is essential to maintain a healthy life.  Yet 80 percent of Americans don’t get enough exercise on a daily basis, (CDC, 2013)  And 43 percent of Americans aged 18-29 use their smartphones for at least four hours per day (PEW, 2015).

Unplugging at your local park and recreation agency is one of the easiest and most convenient ways to stay active and get exercise.
